Community Mapping the Way
From November 2010 to February 2010, the community of Santa Cruz Tepetotutla underwent training in community mapping process, with support from GDF-MA and facilitated by David Jiménez Ramos. With participation of more than 25 community members, a series of classroom and field activities were conducted to reflect on the use and perception of local territory, and to produce outputs and tools to be used locally, such as maps and 3D maps, as well as historical lines, field transects, terrain profiles, productive calendars, local taxonomy and environmental unit classification.
Previously gathered information was delivered to and validated with the community. Community members were trained on the use of GPS, photographic camera and audio recorders, as well as on the use of formats to register field data. A session on community maps with primary school students was also carried on. Mapping activities are included in both Darwin and Conservcom projects.
